Trend Portfolio

We buy funds that trade like stocks, based on which way their prices have been moving and how much they have swung in the past. Trend does not study individual companies. When the rules find nothing to buy, that money sits in short-term U.S. Treasury funds. Trend can hold funds that use borrowed money or bet on prices falling, and it can lose money, including what you put in.

Who this is for

For money you can leave invested for 1+ years, depending on your needs, if you understand exchange-traded products and can handle losses, including sudden ones.

  • You can handle sudden drops

Trend fits money you could lose part of without it hurting your bills or plans.

  • You understand complex funds

Some holdings use borrowed money or bet on prices falling, and they can lose value fast.

  • You're OK with an extra step

Interactive Brokers must approve you to trade these funds. That approval alone doesn't mean Trend is right for you.

What to expect

Understand the strategy and the products before committing.

  • Trend reversals and sideways marketsPrice trends can reverse. Sideways markets can produce repeated losses. Delayed or false signals may cause unexpected losses.
  • Daily-reset leverage and inverse exposureMany leveraged and inverse products reset daily and target a result over one day. Trend may hold them longer than one day, when compounding can produce results materially different from the daily goal, especially in volatile or sideways markets. Significant and sudden losses are possible. These products are primarily short-term tools for sophisticated investors and can be less tax-efficient.
  • Derivatives and borrowing inside fundsSome products Trend may hold use short sales, options, futures, swaps, other derivatives, or borrowing inside the fund. These tools can magnify losses. We do not trade options, futures, swaps, or other derivatives directly.
  • Exchange-traded notesAn exchange-traded note is an issuer obligation, not ownership of a fund. Issuer default, early redemption, limited liquidity, and changes in market price relative to indicative value can cause losses, including a total loss if the issuer defaults.
  • Commodity-linked productsCommodity prices can swing sharply. Futures-based products must replace expiring contracts. The cost of rolling contracts can erode value, and product returns may differ from commodity spot prices. Leverage in some products can amplify losses.
  • Crypto-linked productsWe do not buy cryptocurrency directly. Linked products can be very volatile, deviate from the asset price, and carry futures-roll or digital-wallet risks. Spot crypto products are not registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Crypto trading platforms can be open to fraud and manipulation.
  • Tax reporting and product expensesSome products may issue Schedule K-1, produce unrelated business taxable income (UBTI) in an IRA, or involve passive foreign investment company (PFIC) rules and Form 8621 reporting. Metal- and futures-based products can have different tax treatment. Product fees reduce value. We do not provide tax advice.
  • Overlapping exposureFunds may hold companies or sectors also held by another model portfolio in your account. Combined exposure can be larger than one portfolio alone shows.
  • Interactive Brokers approval and rejected ordersInteractive Brokers requires its own approval to trade complex leveraged products. You apply for it yourself, and we can't do it for you. That approval does not mean Trend fits you. Orders can still be rejected, and a rejected order is not executed. If you lose the approval, we stop new Trend purchases and may end Trend in your account under your advisory agreement.
  • Loss of principalAll investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal. No model portfolio is guaranteed to achieve its objective.

What you pay

Use the calculator below to see your annual advisory fee at any account value. Narstar charges no trading commissions, referral fees, or product sales.

Account value $10,000
Annual advisory fee
Trend $100 per year (1.00%)
Uniform account rate $100 per year (1.00%): all IRAs or taxable with 2+ portfolios

These are estimates. Your real fee is based on your account's average daily value and is charged every three months, after the period ends. Interactive Brokers may charge its own fees. SIMPLE IRA participant accounts have no minimum. The slider stops at $250,000, its display ceiling, but there is no account maximum. This estimate does not decide which portfolio fits you or whether you qualify. Full fee terms.

Uniform account rate

All retirement accounts (Traditional, Roth, Rollover, SEP, SIMPLE, and inherited IRAs) and taxable accounts with two or more model portfolios pay 1.00% annually on the whole account, including cash. The model rates apply to single-portfolio taxable accounts. See fee terms and exceptions.

Account minimum

$3,000 per account. SIMPLE IRA participant accounts have no minimum. See minimums and allocation rules.

How to start

Tell us about your goals, timeline, investing experience, and how much loss you can handle. We tell you whether Trend fits.

Get Interactive Brokers approval

You apply to Interactive Brokers yourself for approval to trade complex leveraged products. We can't apply or sign for you. We make no Trend purchases until you're approved.

Confirm your agreement

Your advisory agreement lists your accounts and model portfolios. Changing how your money is split between portfolios needs your written approval.

Questions

  • Trend picks funds by rules that look at which way prices have been moving and how much they have swung in the past. It does not study individual companies. When the rules find nothing to buy, that money sits in short-term U.S. Treasury funds. Trend aims to swing less than Growth, but that is a goal, not a promise, and some of its holdings can drop suddenly. Holdings can change as conditions change. Trends can reverse or stop, and markets that move sideways can cause repeated losses. Trend can lose money, including what you put in.

  • Yes. Delayed or false signals, sudden trend reversals, and sideways markets may cause unexpected losses. Leveraged and inverse products can produce sudden losses, and an exchange-traded note can lose its entire value if its issuer defaults. Products with daily goals may be held longer than one day, when results can differ materially from their stated daily goal. Approval from Interactive Brokers to trade these funds does not mean Trend fits you.

  • You must apply to Interactive Brokers yourself for approval to trade complex leveraged products. We can't apply, sign, or fill out the request for you. We make no Trend purchases without that approval. Interactive Brokers may still reject an order, and a rejected order is not executed. If you lose the approval, we stop new purchases, hold the Trend share of new deposits in cash, tell you in writing, and follow your advisory agreement's process for ending Trend in your account.

  • A taxable account holding only Trend pays 1.00% a year. Retirement accounts, and taxable accounts holding two or more model portfolios, pay a uniform 1.00%. Either way the fee applies to the whole account, cash included. We bill every three months, after the period ends. Fund expenses and Interactive Brokers fees are separate.

  • An IRA can hold Trend, but that alone doesn't make Trend right for you. You need to be able to handle losses, including sudden ones, and you need approval from Interactive Brokers to trade complex leveraged products. Some holdings can create unrelated business taxable income in an IRA or other unusual tax reporting. Talk to a tax professional before investing.
